Know & Grow Tutoring Program

We have 32 iPads for kindergarteners and first-graders!
The Know & Grow Tutoring Program is proven to increase literacy skills in our demographic. In the short time our program has been in existence, we’ve seen significant academic growth. During this schoolyear, we had a handful of kindergarteners go from “knowing nothing” to being among the top in their class in both English Language Arts and math – and only in a matter of months.
We provide our little learners with iPads and cellular Internet connection to access the free, award-winning Khan Academy Kids app. By teaching students how to use this fun learning software on iPads they can take home and use without any reliance on any adult – much less a tech-knowledgeable adult – means we’ve extended the child’s learning time to the evenings, weekends, and – if still not caught up – over the long summer break. Our Know & Grow Tutoring Program can be done at the family’s convenience and does not cost parents anything – not even gas money!
It is gratifying to see the children want to take the iPads home. They want to learn!
The 2022-23 school year was the first year we served all kindergarten classrooms – and for an entire school year. Armed with iPads, our volunteers went into the classrooms to lead group sessions using the award-winning Khan Academy Kids software. Whether these children are ones who did not attend pre-school or simply did not grasp what was being taught quickly enough, the letters of the alphabet and/or other concepts passed them by. The students are already feeling confident and empowered when they earn the right to take the iPad home. The Learning Path – led by Kodi the bear – is perfect for afterschool use. The students are presented with award-winning lessons that allow them to learn each skill at the appropriate level and at their own pace.
At the beginning of the school year, the classroom teachers enroll their lowest-performing kindergarteners in our Know & Grow Tutoring Program. As the lowest-performing students get caught up, we also help the more advanced students by using the learning software to fill in any gaps in their learning. As we know, it is important to fill in learning gaps early – the earlier the better.
