Hop the Line

Our teachers were instructing kindergarteners on the use of the number line with only a paper banner above the chalkboard.  Now every kindergartener has his/her own complete with a dry erase marker and eraser.

Kindergarten classrooms use number lines to explore the concepts of addition and subtraction.  In our version, the student can position a two-faced “bird coin” on the first number in the equation looking forward (addition) or backward (subtracting).  Then, the child can hop the bird along the number line to solve the equation.

The teachers also designed the reverse side with a different number line activity.  The children write a number in a square and then write the number that comes before and after.
