My Sight Words

Would you believe kindergarteners are expected to know 237 words by sight? To help them achieve this goal, we’ve prepared 125 charts listing all these “sight words.”  They are colorful and laminated.  Each kindergartener gets one for his/her personal use in the classroom. This project was funded by a grant from Walmart River City Marketplace.

Sorter / Storage

Every kindergarten classroom now has two sorters for storage.  One stores 11″x17″ sheets and laminates that help teach the kids understand number structure.  The second is used to store trays of letters that help teach kids how to read.  As modern classrooms contain more and more teaching aids, organization is a must!

Students Helping Students

Over the summer, highschoolers volunteered 427 hours helping us prepare for this school year. They put together new literacy materials, including UFLI word trays and decodable notebooks.  They cleaned and organized existing teaching tools:  they replaced batteries in etch-a-sketches, cleaned and counted bags of geo shapes, cleaned and prepped the iPads for screen protector replacements,

Quiet Feet

All kindergarteners and first grade chair legs now have quiet feet.  In addition to reducing the classroom noise level, the tennis balls also make it possible for the young children to slide and re-arrange their chairs.
